How to Restore Your District of Columbia License After a No-Insurance Suspension
The short answer
These are the steps the District of Columbia agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. The state's reinstatement fee is $115. Whether an SR-22 is also required depends on your case.
Steps listed by the District of Columbia agency
- An insurance lapse suspends the DC vehicle registration: respond to the DC DMV insurance verification notice by having proof of insurance provided through DCIVS.org.
- Pay the lapse fines, which increase over time, at a DC DMV service center.
- For a suspended driver license, pay the reinstatement fee online (DC DMV accepts suspension reinstatement fees online only).
- Clear any other stops on the license; DC DMV notifies you by mail of what you must do to reinstate.

Check your status first
The state has no online status check that we found; its page lists how to ask by phone or in person.
Need to drive to work while suspended? The state offers a Limited Occupational License. Many states limit these licenses to certain suspensions, such as DUI cases, so check that it covers yours.
