How to Restore Your Hawaii License After a No-Insurance Suspension
The short answer
These are the steps the Hawaii agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. Hawaii does not set a state fee; counties charge it (Honolulu: $20). A no-insurance suspension in Hawaii does not require an SR-22 (HRS 431:10C-117); other suspensions can require one for 3 years.
Steps listed by the Hawaii agency
- Serve the court-ordered suspension: three months for the first conviction, one year for a subsequent offense within five years (HRS 431:10C-117)
- For this suspension the driver shall not be required to obtain proof of financial responsibility under HRS 287-20
- If an order does require proof, contact your insurance company to submit the SR-22 Form; the county office does not provide it
- Pay the county reinstatement fee at the county driver licensing office (Honolulu: $20)
Check your status first
The state has no online status check that we found; its page lists how to ask by phone or in person.
Need to drive to work while suspended? The state offers a Ignition interlock permit; employee driver's permit. Many states limit these licenses to certain suspensions, such as DUI cases, so check that it covers yours.
