How to Restore Your Illinois License After a No-Insurance Suspension

Last checked · Sources listed below

The short answer

These are the steps the Illinois agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. The state's reinstatement fees are $70 to $500, depending on the suspension. Whether an SR-22 is also required depends on your case.

Steps listed by the Illinois agency

  1. Serve the 3-month driver's license suspension that follows a conviction for driving uninsured (625 ILCS 5/3-707(c-1)).
  2. Pay the $100 Mandatory Insurance Conviction reinstatement fee online with a credit or debit card, by phone at 217-782-6212, or in person.
  3. You may also owe a separate mandatory insurance fee for the license plate suspension; contact Vehicle Services to pay it.
  4. On a third or subsequent conviction, file proof of financial responsibility (SR-22) and keep it for at least 3 years.

Need to drive to work while suspended? The state offers a Restricted Driving Permit (RDP). Many states limit these licenses to certain suspensions, such as DUI cases, so check that it covers yours.
