How to Restore Your Indiana License After a No-Insurance Suspension

Last checked · Sources listed below

The short answer

These are the steps the Indiana agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. The state's reinstatement fees are $250 to $1,000, depending on the suspension. Whether an SR-22 is also required depends on your case.

Steps listed by the Indiana agency

  1. Review the Reinstatement Requirements section of your driver record (free Viewable Driver Record in myBMV).
  2. If you were insured on the date in question, have your insurance provider submit a Certificate of Compliance (COC) to the BMV.
  3. If not, have your insurance provider electronically file an SR-22; maintaining it for 180 consecutive days with no lapse terminates the insurance suspension and the no-insurance reinstatement fee is not owed.
  4. Otherwise pay the reinstatement fee ($250 first, $500 second, $1,000 third or later) by calling 888-692-6841 with your access code, by mail with the reinstatement coupon, or at a BMV Connect kiosk.

Need to drive to work while suspended? The state offers a Specialized Driving Privileges (SDP), court petition under IC 9-30-16. Many states limit these licenses to certain suspensions, such as DUI cases, so check that it covers yours.
