How to Restore Your Iowa License After a No-Insurance Suspension
The short answer
These are the steps the Iowa agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. The state's reinstatement fees are $20 to $200, depending on the suspension. Whether an SR-22 is also required depends on your case.
The steps below are the ones the state lists for a suspension after a crash without insurance.
Steps listed by the Iowa agency
- Provide one of: proof you had insurance at the time of the accident, a security deposit, a General Release, an agreement to pay the other party, or an Affidavit of Seller (mail to PO Box 9204, Des Moines, Iowa 50306-9204).
- File proof of financial responsibility (SR-22 from your insurer, or $55,000 bond, cash or securities) for two years from the first day of the suspension.
- Sign in to view your reinstatement requirements with your Iowa driver's license number or customer number.
- Schedule an appointment at the DMV to reinstate, and pay a $20 reinstatement fee and a $10 duplicate license fee.
- If more than one year without a valid license, pass a knowledge test and a driving test.

Check your status first
Check your license status or reinstatement requirements on the state's own website before you pay anything.
Need to drive to work while suspended? The state offers a Temporary Restricted License (TRL), also called a work permit. Many states limit these licenses to certain suspensions, such as DUI cases, so check that it covers yours.
