How to Restore Your Montana License After a No-Insurance Suspension

Last checked · Sources listed below

The short answer

These are the steps the Montana agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. The state's reinstatement fees are $100 to $200, depending on the suspension. Whether an SR-22 is also required depends on your case.

In Montana, a gap in insurance mainly affects the vehicle registration; the steps below follow the state's own process.

Steps listed by the Montana agency

  1. Follow any instructions that the judge or court gave
  2. Provide proof of liability insurance to the Motor Vehicle Division Records and Driver Control Unit in Helena (fax 406-444-1631 or P.O. Box 201430, Helena MT 59620-1430)
  3. Purchase restricted registration and plates at your local County Treasurer's office; after the 90 or 180 day period, return to have the restriction removed
  4. Pay the $100 reinstatement fee online, or by check or money order payable to the Motor Vehicle Division

Need to drive to work while suspended? The state offers a Restricted probationary license. Many states limit these licenses to certain suspensions, such as DUI cases, so check that it covers yours.
