How to Restore Your New Jersey License After a No-Insurance Suspension

Last checked · Sources listed below

The short answer

These are the steps the New Jersey agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. The state's reinstatement fee is $100. New Jersey uses its own proof-of-insurance rule instead of the SR-22 name.

In New Jersey, a gap in insurance mainly affects the vehicle registration; the steps below follow the state's own process.

Steps listed by the New Jersey agency

  1. Submit a photocopy of your current NJ insurance identification card, or the declaration page of your current policy (must include the VIN), to UM.INFO@MVC.NJ.GOV, by mail to NJMVC, PO Box 132, Trenton, NJ 08666, or by fax.
  2. If you no longer own the vehicle, surrender the registration and plates and submit the plate receipt (or an RSC-6 form).
  3. Pay the $100 restoration fee for each privilege suspended (license and registration) online, in person at a Regional Service Center, or by check or money order to NJMVC, P.O. Box 165, Trenton, NJ 08666-0165.
  4. Do not drive until you receive written notification from the MVC that your privileges have been restored.
