How to Restore Your North Carolina License After a No-Insurance Suspension
The short answer
These are the steps the North Carolina agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. The state's reinstatement fees are $50 to $167.75, depending on the suspension. North Carolina uses its own proof-of-insurance rule instead of the SR-22 name.
Steps listed by the North Carolina agency
- Pay the $83.50 restoration fee and the $50 service fee (service fee not required if the license was surrendered before the effective date) online through PayIt, in person at a driver license office, or by mail to the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles Fiscal Unit.
- Get Form DL-123 from your insurance agent before your visit (digital proof is not accepted; DL-123 is valid 30 days from issuance).
- Reapply for your license in person at a driver license office (online only for eligible failure-to-appear or failure-to-pay suspensions).
- For a vehicle insurance lapse, pay the $50, $100 or $150 civil penalty, plus the $50 restoration fee at registration renewal.

Check your status first
Check your license status or reinstatement requirements on the state's own website before you pay anything.
Need to drive to work while suspended? The state offers a Limited Driving Privilege (court-issued). Many states limit these licenses to certain suspensions, such as DUI cases, so check that it covers yours.
