How to Restore Your Ohio License After a No-Insurance Suspension

Last checked · Sources listed below

The short answer

These are the steps the Ohio agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. The state's reinstatement fees are $40 to $600, depending on the suspension. Whether an SR-22 is also required depends on your case.

Steps listed by the Ohio agency

  1. The suspension can be removed if valid proof of coverage at the time of the traffic stop or accident is provided to the BMV.
  2. Otherwise, serve any suspension term (one year for a 2nd offense in a year, two years for a 3rd).
  3. Carry a certificate of insurance (SR-22/bond) for one year.
  4. Pay the reinstatement fee ($40 1st, $300 2nd, $600 3rd or later) through View & Pay Reinstatement Fees.

Check your status first

Check your license status or reinstatement requirements on the state's own website before you pay anything.

Check status with the state

Need to drive to work while suspended? The state offers a Limited Driving Privileges (court-granted). Many states limit these licenses to certain suspensions, such as DUI cases, so check that it covers yours.
