How to Restore Your Rhode Island License After a No-Insurance Suspension

Last checked · Sources listed below

The short answer

These are the steps the Rhode Island agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. The state's reinstatement fees are $153.50 to $353.50, depending on the suspension. The Rhode Island agency lists proof of insurance, not an SR-22, for reinstatement.

Steps listed by the Rhode Island agency

  1. Obtain insurance or provide proof of existing insurance by having your insurance agent or company electronically submit it to RIIVS, referencing the number at the top of the letter.
  2. If the registration is revoked: obtain insurance, complete an affidavit attesting that you have obtained it, and pay $253.50.
  3. Complete the restoration online (Insurance Revocation Reinstatement) or in person by appointment at the Insurance Verification Office, 600 New London Avenue, Cranston.
  4. Stay insured during the 12-month monitoring period; a lapse brings immediate revocation and a block on license and registration privileges.

Check status with the state

Need to drive to work while suspended? The state offers a Hardship License (court ordered, with ignition interlock). Many states limit these licenses to certain suspensions, such as DUI cases, so check that it covers yours.
