Last checked · Sources listed below

The short answer

These are the steps the South Carolina agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. The state's reinstatement fees are $100 to $700, depending on the suspension. Whether an SR-22 is also required depends on your case.

Steps listed by the South Carolina agency

  1. Have your insurance company electronically verify insurance coverage with the SCDMV.
  2. Driving a vehicle you do not own: serve the 30-day suspension and pay the $100 reinstatement fee.
  3. Driving a vehicle you own: pay the $700 uninsured motorist fee and have your insurer file an SR-22 for three years starting with the date of suspension.
  4. Pay reinstatement fees online (Pay Reinstatement Fees) or at an SCDMV branch.

Need to drive to work while suspended? The state offers a Route Restricted License; Provisional License; Temporary Alcohol License. Many states limit these licenses to certain suspensions, such as DUI cases, so check that it covers yours.
