How to Restore Your West Virginia License After a No-Insurance Suspension

Last checked · Sources listed below

The short answer

These are the steps the West Virginia agency lists to restore a license after a suspension for no insurance. The state's reinstatement fees are $50 to $100, depending on the suspension. West Virginia uses its own proof-of-insurance rule instead of the SR-22 name.

Steps listed by the West Virginia agency

  1. Serve the suspension: 30 days for a first offense, 90 days for a second or subsequent insurance violation within five years (no driving permit is available).
  2. Pay the $50.00 driver's license reinstatement fee; it may be paid before the suspension ends, but the suspension stays in effect until served.
  3. Provide current proof of West Virginia liability insurance on the active vehicle registration.
  4. Reinstate the vehicle registration: $100.00 fee plus proof of insurance for all registered vehicles ($50.00 more if a State Police secure order was sent on the plate).
  5. Pay through DMV Online Reinstatement Services, or by mail or in person at DMV Headquarters; regional offices cannot handle reinstatements.

Check your status first

Check your license status or reinstatement requirements on the state's own website before you pay anything.

Check status with the state

Need to drive to work while suspended? The state offers a Motor Vehicle Alcohol and Drug Test and Lock Program (interlock restricted license). Many states limit these licenses to certain suspensions, such as DUI cases, so check that it covers yours.
