Minimum Car Insurance Requirements by State

The short answer

Every state except New Hampshire requires drivers to carry liability insurance, and the minimum is written as three numbers: bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident, and property damage, in thousands of dollars. The lowest bodily injury minimums are Florida's SR-22 limits ($10,000 / $20,000 / $10,000); the highest overall are North Carolina's ($50,000 / $100,000 / $50,000). Pennsylvania has the lowest property damage minimum ($5,000). Some states also require personal injury protection (PIP) or uninsured motorist coverage. Each state's page links its sources.
